Detail:
It is over 30 years since the first living cichlids from
Lake Malawi were imported. The aquarists at that time were so enthusiastic
about the unusual coloration of these new species that they referred
to them a "Fresh Water Coral Fish" in the ornamental fish
journals. Enormous prices were paid at the beginning of the 1960s
for the first wild-caught fish. This situation gradually changed
as it became apparent how easy it is to breed these maternal mouthbrooding
cichlids and inexpensive captive-bred fish soon became available
in the assortment offered by the specialist ornamental fish trade.
