No invertebrates are more popular in the freshwater aquarium
than are the apple snails or ampullariids, the large often brightly
coloured"mystery snails" that can be found in every pet
shop. Few hobbyists know anything about the natural history of these
fascinating animals, however, and even the details of their care and
breeding often are poorly understood. Here at last is an introduction
to the family Ampullariidae from the tropics of the world, with a
summary of all aspects of their lives, from structure and taxonomy
to breeding behaviour, and especially care in the aquarium. This is
the first time this information has been collected in a book designed
for aquariusts, and it is sure to provide interesing and useful reading.
Many full-colour photos of apple snails in their natural habitiats,
in the aquarium and in shell collections make understanding and identifying
these often confusing animals a bit easier. An additional section
covers some of the other freshwater snails likely to be found in the
aquarium either on pupose or by accident. The authors, both well-known
malacologists, have combined their different experiences to produce
a book that should be on the shelf of every freshwater aquarist. |
